Born James Constable Paterson, he was always known as Hamish. Reference to self portrait and portrait of Sivell (SNPG file) Seriously wounded in First World War. Friend of Oswald Atherton Fleming, Mac, who rented 14a High Street, Kirkcudbright from Hornel. His Creetown Quarry exhibited at Harbour Gallery, Kirkcudbright Jubilee, 1982.

His friend Mac Fleming married Dorothy L Sayers in 1926.

1928 His portrait of W O Hutchison purchased by Scottish Modern Arts Association.  In 1932 presented a watercolour of the Anwoth Hotel, Gatehouse to his friend Joe Dignam, owner of the hotel.
